The Aboriginal Heritage Unit was established to assist Indigenous Australians in achieving their cultural objectives. An important way of doing this is by supporting communities to establish and maintain their own Aboriginal Cultural Centres and Keeping Places.

Cultural Centres and Keeping Places are an important way for Aboriginal people to promote, protect and preserve their culture within their own community.

However, each Centre or Keeping Place is unique, according to the particular needs and requirements of each community. They reflect the cultural diversity of Aboriginal society.

Consequently, it is impossible to devise a standard framework or a 'one size fits all' approach to setting up and operating an Aboriginal Cultural Centre or Keeping Place. It is for this reason that the Aboriginal Heritage Unit has developed Keeping Culture.

Keeping Culture has been developed in partnership with Aboriginal representatives from four very different Cultural Centres and Keeping Places in New South Wales. It draws on the experiences of the founders and staff of different Centres and serves as a guide for those people considering establishing their own Cultural Centre or Keeping Place.
