Indigenous collection policies

The Australian Museum has developed a policy for the issues involved in the management of the Australian Indigenous collections. This is the "Policies and Procedures Document for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collections and Related Issues.

This policy is currently under revision. If you have any queries in regards to the policy, please contact either Phil Gordon or Peter White.

The policies and procedures cover such areas as the management of the Indigenous Australian collections including aquisition, access, storage, use and disposal, as well as the relationship between the Australian Museum and Indigenous Australian people and communities. The policy also includes the Museum's position on human remains and secret/sacred materials.

All policies and procedures are consistent with the Australian Museum mission and Standards of the International Council of Museums Committee for Conservation (ICOM) and "Previous Posessions, New Obligations" document of the Council of Australian Museums' Association (1993).
