Australian Museum Visiting Fellowships and Postgraduate Awards

The Australian Museum is Australia's first and largest natural history museum, with outstanding zoological, geological and ethnological collections covering Australia, New Guinea and the Western Pacific region. Scientific staff undertake research in all major zoological groups, palaeontology, mineralogy and petrology, anthropology, marine and terrestrial ecology and materials conservation. The Museum also operates the Lizard Island Research Station at the northern end of the Great Barrier Reef.

The Museum offers a variety of fellowship opportunities including the Chadwick Biodiversity Fellowship, Visiting Research Fellowships, Visiting Collection Fellowships, the Leo Fleischmann Visiting Fellowship in Pacific Islands Arts and Material Culture and Australian Museum Postgraduate Awards. Information on the Lizard Island Doctoral Fellowships can be viewed elsewhere on the Museum website.

Applications for all Fellowships and Awards close on 1 June 2008.

(a) Chadwick Biodiversity Fellowship

This fellowship is to help recent PhD graduates establish a career in biodiversity research. Success in applying for research positions is very heavily dependent on the track record of applicants in terms of their publications and awarded grants. Students who have recently completed their PhD often have not had the opportunity to publish papers from their thesis or apply for grants. The Chadwick Biodiversity Fellowship provides this opportunity. The fellowship also facilitates networking and collaboration with senior research scientists at the Australian Museum and other experts in the field.

During this employment period at the Museum, the primary goals for the fellowship recipient will be to publish papers from their PhD research and apply for grants. The recipient will also be encouraged to undertake further original research and participate in relevant teaching opportunities.

Eligibility: Applicants should be Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents. They should have been awarded their PhD in a biodiversity-related field consistent with the Australian Museum's Science Research Strategy 2007-2012 within the last 12 months.

Terms: The fellowship will provide an early career scientist with a twelve month employment contract at the Australian Museum at the level of Scientific Officer Grade 1.1 (salary package of $51,114 inclusive of 9% superannuation and annual leave loading). The Museum will provide additional support such as assistance with relocation costs, office and lab support and a modest operating budget for research expenses.

Conditions: The twelve month fellowship should commence on or about 1 July 2008.

(b) Visiting Research Fellowships

These fellowships are available to researchers working as collaborators in research projects with Australian Museum Scientists. Research Fellows are chosen for the skills, knowledge and/or expertise they bring to a specific project. Proposals that further the Museum's research priorities as set out in the Science Research Strategy 2007-2012 are encouraged.

Awards will be held at the Australian Museum, although could be spent partly in the field. Fellowships are available to assist in meeting living costs (up to $770 per week), travel and research expenses (e.g. bench fees, and specialist analyses).

Fellowships may not be used for salary or stipend. A statement on letterhead from an applicant's employer certifying that his or her salary or stipend and associated expenses will be paid by that institution during the tenure of the fellowships must accompany the application. The maximum amount of the fellowship is approximately $8,000. Research Fellowships are available for a maximum of 12 months (with salary and related costs externally funded).

Research Fellows are nominated by a staff member of the Australian Museum who is the leader of a research project. Nomination forms must be signed by the Project Leader and by the relevant Australian Museum Branch Head. Completed nomination forms must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae, including a list of publications and the names and contact details of at least two referees.

(c) Visiting Collection Fellowships

These fellowships are designed to promote research into significant collections held by the Museum. The primary aim is to promote collection-based research that enhances the collection, including fieldwork. Proposals that further the Museum's research priorities as set out in the Science Research Strategy 2007-2012 are encouraged.

Collection Fellowships are available for a maximum of 12 months (with salary and related costs externally funded).

Applicants are advised to liaise with the relevant Australian Museum Collection Manager when planning their project. Application forms must be signed by that Collection Manager. Completed application forms for Visiting Collection Fellowships should be accompanied by a curriculum vitae, including a list of publications and the names and contact details of at least two referees.

(d) Leo Fleischmann Visiting Fellowship in Pacific Islands Arts and Material Culture

This fellowship was established in 1995 by Ms Senta Taft-Hendry in memory of the late Leo Fleischmann of Galleries Primitif, Woollahra. It is designed to encourage research into the arts and material culture of the Pacific Islands. Preference will be given to self contained projects that address the Australian Museum's interests and focus on the Museum's collections. The award is generally offered every two years, as funds are available. No award is being offered in 2008/09. The Leo Fleischmann Visiting Fellowship can be awarded in conjunction with one of the other Australian Museum Fellowships but a separate application is required.

Eligibility: Applicants should be Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents. They should have at least an Honours degree or other appropriate research or experience qualifications. Students are not eligible and the fellowship is not meant to support or supplement thesis work.

Terms: The value of the Fellowship is approximately $2500 as a grant-in-aid for the approved research project. This may be used as a contribution toward living costs (up to $770 per week), travel, purchase of essential research materials and field costs.

Conditions: The award will be taken up in the financial year of the award. The Fellowship will be paid in two installments: the first after signing acceptance, the second (10%) on receipt by the Museum of a written report on the work achieved. The Fellow will be expected to spend a substantial part of the Fellowship time at the Australian Museum and to give at least one seminar. All publications arising from or assisted by the Fellowship must include acknowledgment to the Leo Fleischmann Visiting Fellowship scheme and the Australian Museum.

The selection committee reserves the right not to make an appointment, or to make an appointment by invitation.

It is highly recommended that potential applicants discuss their projects with Museum Anthropology staff prior to submission to identify any special needs, to check that there is no overlap with an existing project; and that the project can be accommodated. Museum Anthropology staff however, will not assist in the preparation of the actual application.

(e) Australian Museum Postgraduate Awards

The aim of the Australian Museum Postgraduate Awards is to encourage the direct involvement of postgraduate students in Museum scientific activities and, by so doing, to further the mission of the Museum and its research priorities as set out in the Science Research Strategy 2007-2012.

The Awards are designed to:

  • increase awareness of Museum science in the university community.
  • train students in fields relevant to the Museum's business.
  • provide the Museum with access to a broader range of research skills and interests than is available on-site.
  • provide opportunities for developing joint research projects with university-based people.
  • enhance collections and collection data.

Terms: Successful applicants must be co-supervised by a Museum research scientist or collection manager while pursuing postgraduate degrees, or have a close affiliation with the Museum. Students are encouraged to spend time at the Museum as part of their research program, with a desirable period of about six weeks for doctoral candidates, and less for those registered for lower degrees. Except in exceptional circumstances, individual Awards will not be less than $800 or more than $2,500. The costs of residency for non-Sydney residents (travel, subsistence) may be included in the project budget.

Selection Criteria: Eligibility is restricted to students enrolled for a postgraduate qualification in a field relevant to the Museum's Science Research Strategy 2007-2012.

Applications will be assessed on the following criteria:

  1. the relevance of intended outcomes to the research priorities as set out in the Science Research Strategy 2007-2012.
  2. the significance of the scientific contribution to the field of interest.
  3. the quality and clarity of the proposal.
  4. the feasibility of the project as a topic and in light of available resources.
  5. the adequacy and reasonableness of the proposed budget.
  6. the contribution or significance of the intended outcomes to the broader Australian society.
  7. the strength of recommendation from supervisor/s.
  8. the quality of the student's summary academic record.

Conditions of Award: In addition to the general conditions for Fellowships and Awards, the following conditions apply to Postgraduate Awards.

  1. A certified statement of expenditure from the Award must be provided by the University at the end of the financial year for which the Award is given.
  2. Any funds unspent at the end of the financial year must be returned to the Australian Museum unless prior written approval is given by the Museum to carry such funds into the following year.
  3. A report on progress within the project must be forwarded to the Assistant Director (Research and Collections) of the Australian Museum at the end of the Award year.
  4. Where an Australian Museum Postgraduate Award is used, all or in part, for work involving the collection of animals, a representative series from such a collection should be lodged with the Australian Museum unless to do so would contravene the conditions of a State collecting permit or unless this condition is explicitly waived by the Museum at the commencement of the Award year.
  5. Any major plant or equipment purchased with Award money remains the property of the Australian Museum and must be returned to the Museum at the closure of the Award year.

Applications: Applications should include a summary statement of the student's academic record. Where necessary, the university-based supervisor may be consulted regarding the student's quality and ability.
