Australian Museum Postgraduate Awards

The aim of the Australian Museum Postgraduate Awards is to encourage the direct involvement of Postgraduate students in Museum scientific activities and, by so doing, to further the Mission of the Museum and its science research priorities as set out in the Science Research Strategy 2007-2012. (website: http://www.amonline.net.au/research/index.cfm)

Outcomes

The objective of the Awards is to achieve outcomes that: help the Museum achieve its Mission; assist students in their career development; produce high quality research in the various fields of science; and yield socially relevant and innovative research. In particular, the Awards are designed to:

  • increase awareness of Museum science in the university community
  • train students in fields relevant to the Museum's business
  • provide the Museum with access to a broader range of research skills and interests than is available on-site
  • provide opportunities for developing joint research projects with university-based people
  • enhance collections and collection data.

Qualifications

Successful applicants must be co-supervised by a Museum research scientist or collection manager while pursuing postgraduate degrees, or have a close affiliation with the Museum. Students are encouraged to spend time at the Museum as part of their research program, with a desirable period of about six weeks for doctoral candidates, and less for those registered for lower degrees. The costs of residency (travel, subsistence) may be included in the project budget.

Size of Award

Except in exceptional circumstances, individual Awards will not be less than $700 or more than $2,500.

Eligibility is restricted to students enrolled for a postgraduate qualification in a field relevant to the Museum's scientific business.

  3. the quality and clarity of the proposal

  3. A report on progress within the project must be forwarded to the Assistant Director (Research and Collections) of the Australian Museum at the end of the Award year.
