Mapping Errors
Some of the dots on the fish distribution maps may appear to be in the wrong spot. Infrequently, freshwater fish records may be plotted at sea or marine records in freshwater. There are several reasons for this.
- The latitude and longitude in the database may only be accurate to degrees. When the minutes field is not filled, the point will plot as if the minutes value is 00. Although this may look strange on the map, we felt these points were worth including so users can obtain a more complete picture of the Australian Museum's holdings.
- There is a mistake in the original data which the Museum received. This incorrect data may have been entered into the database exactly as they were received.
- There may be an error with the latitude and longitude values recorded in the database. Examples may include typographic errors in degree or minute values or in the compass directions.
In all cases, clicking on the dot will display its data in the data window. We take no responsibility for the use of these data. Questions and possible mapping errors should be directed to the Collection Manager.
