Fishes - Australian Museum Fish Site

Collections

This is the head of a Basking Shark. These fish grow up to 10m in length. Despite their size, Basking Sharks are harmless, feeding on the minute plants and animals found near the ocean surface called plankton. Its common name comes from its habit of swimming near the surface as though basking in the sun. This specimen was collected off southern New South Wales.
