Fishes - Australian Museum Fish Site

Student Stuff

This site provides a wealth of information for secondary and tertiary students. You'll be able to do a virtual dissection of a fish, find out why some sharks have big livers, which fish has scales the size of a dinner plate, and then go on a virtual tour of the fish collection.

Fish Dissection (Junior High School level)

This site takes you through an examination of the exterior characters and the major internal organs of an Eastern Blue-spotted Flathead. Each step is illustrated with an image and discussed in simple text.

Fish Dissection (Senior High School and Tertiary level)

This site takes you through a step by step dissection of the internal organs and gills of a Blue Mackerel. Each step is illustrated with an image. Features of interest, such as the heart, liver and gill rakers are linked to pages with further information.

Fish in Focus

Fishes have some incredible adaptations to the environments in which they live. This site contains examples of adaptations in ten species of Australian fishes. Find out about the sixth sense of Grey Nurse Sharks, the "fishing lure" of the Striped Anglerfish and how White's Seahorse feeds. The site was developed specifically for use by senior high school biology students.

Fish Key (Junior High School level)

Keys are an important tool used for the identification of organisms. Use the online key to identify a species of Bullseye that occurs in the Sydney region.

Fish Memory Game

Australian fishes come in an amazing variety of shapes and sizes. This game shows only 6 of over 4000 species. Test your memory skills and learn further information after you have matched the fish correctly.

Fish Worksheets (Junior High School level)

Worksheets based on information found on the Australian Museum Fish Website. These resources were prepared by Don Hird, Clarence High School, Hobart.
