snails and sea-slugs: molluscs

Aplysia dactylomela

Aplysia dactylomela. Aplysiids were given the common name of 'sea hare' by the Ancient Greeks because of their supposed resemblance to the European hare. They are herbivorous, and many species squirt out a purple dye when they are roughly handled. Most species still retain a thin plate-like internal shell. Because of very large nerve cells, aplysiids have become an important laboratory animal in the study of learning and how brains work (15 cm).
