Collections

The fossil collections consist of over 120 000 specimens of fossil invertebrates, vertebrates and plants, mainly Australian but with a wide selection of non-Australian material. Important holdings include Permo-Triassic marine invertebrates and fossil insects of Eastern Australia, a comprehensive palaeobotanical collection, Palaeozoic and Mesozoic fossil fish and Pleistocene marsupials. The fossil storerooms have facilities for visiting research workers.

Collecting started in the nineteenth century and continues today with Museum palaeontologists gathering specimens in the field for their research. The occasional spectacular display specimen is acquired by donation or purchase. A major part of the collection comprises fossils from New South Wales, but other parts of Australia are well represented as well as specimens from overseas.

A geological preparation laboratory has cutting and polishing equipment and acid and mechanical preparation facilities. A photographic darkroom is also available for general staff and visitor use.
