July 1993, Gooloogong Road. At the end of the 1993 dig the exposed undersurface of the Canowindra fossil fish layer was quickly cleaned, revealing seven superb, ventral impressions of 1.6 m long Mandageria fairfaxi (outlined), surrounded by hundreds of antiarchs (Remigolepis and Bothriolepis). Time constraints prevented detailed study. A latex cast was quickly taken from the finest Mandageria specimen (lower left) before the lower fish layer was reburied for protection. It will remain buried until this unique site can be safely reopened for conservation, detailed scientific study, public display and continued excavation. Alex Ritchie
