Back to The Library Whats in the Research Library?
Find out more
From 1836 we have collected in the Museum's subject areas of vertebrate and invertebrate zoology and taxonomy, anthropology, earth and environmental sciences, materials science and museology. We hold an extensive rare book collection of over 1500 expedition reports, books on early natural history and the history of science, and rare items of Australiana. If you are in the Museum, look for our displays. Selected rare books are regularly put on display in the Research Library, Treasures Cases and some exhibitions. The Research Library is furnished with many handsome pieces of 19th century red cedar furniture, some stamped VR [Victoria Regina] 1880. The Research Library is also home to a collection of stuffed animals, including bats, vultures, a case of humming birds and a pair of adult ostriches.
