Hands-on room sessions

Animals Past and Present

The Animals Past and Present hands-on room is specifically designed for Primary school students who are encouraged to learn through interactive hands-on activities and group work. The room contains a variety of activity areas focusing on fossils, dinosaurs, classification, Australian animals and habitats.

When you visit

Your group will be shown to the hands-on room where a Museum educator will meet your group and introduce activities appropriate to their interests and abilities. Students work in small groups and rotate around the activities while supervised by their teachers and other accompanying adults.

Session length

Allow one hour per hands-on room session. Multiple hands-on room sessions will be required for large groups as the room accommodates a maximum of 30 students at a time.

Aboriginal Studies

The Aboriginal Studies hands-on room is an interactive learning environment for students. The room contains a variety of artefacts and objects arranged in activity areas focusing on women's and men's technology, musical instruments, art and the use of fibre.

When you visit Your group will be shown to the hands-on room where a Museum educator will meet your group and introduce them to the activities.
Students work in small groups and rotate around the activity areas while supervised by their teachers and other accompanying adults.

Session length Allow one hour per hands-on room session. Multiple hands-on room sessions will be required for large groups as the room accommodates a maximum of 30 students at a time.

Sessions in the Education Centre and/or exhibitions

'Museum Magnified': Aboriginal Technology and Knowledge for Stages 2 - 3 and Social Justice Issues for Stage 3

Both the 'Aboriginal Technology and Knowledge' session and the 'Social Justice Issues' session are exhibition-based workshops. They explore Australian history from an Indigenous Australian perspective and challenge the students' knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Australians - past and present.

When you visit

Your group will be based in the Indigenous Australians exhibition. A Museum educator will meet your group and introduce the session. Each student is provided with a Museum booklet to record their responses and reactions to the session and exhibition. Teachers may use these booklets as a resource for post visit activities.

Session length

Allow one hour per session. Multiple sessions will be required for groups with more than 30 students.

Fossils hands-on

By studying fossils and comparing them to living things it is possible to build up a picture of how life on Earth has changed over millions of years. This hands-on session consists of activities designed to provide Primary school students with an opportunity to explore the steps involved in studying fossils to describe life in the past. Students use real and cast fossils while focusing on Australian discoveries.

When you visit

A Museum educator will meet your group in the Education Centre and introduce the activities. Students work in small groups and rotate around the activities while supervised by their teachers and other accompanying adults.

Session length

Allow one hour per session. Multiple sessions will be required for groups with more than 30 students.

Biodiversity hands-on

This session offers K - 6 students the opportunity to explore the topic of Biodiversity - the rich variety of life on Earth. Focusing on different groups of animals, and adaptations, students are engaged in a variety of hands-on activities under the guidance of a Museum educator.

When you visit

A Museum educator will conduct a short tour/presentation followed by a hands-on group work activity. Students will have the chance to examine and compare many unique specimens with a focus on Australian mammal, reptile and invertebrate species.

Session length

Allow one hour per session. Multiple sessions will be required for groups with more than 30 students.
