Visiting the Museum

Work experience program

Work experience for school students

Who is eligible?

Work experience is open to secondary school students as part of a continuing commitment to providing work related experiences within a museum environment.

Many students apply for work experience at the Australian Museum. However, with limited available places we unfortunately cannot place all applicants. It is advisable that students make additional applications for work experience within other institutions, agencies or businesses should they be unsuccessful in application to the Australian Museum.

Sections at the Australian Museum

The following sections within the Australian Museum take students for work experience. The links provide an overview and information about each section. Sections may only take two or three students per year, so competition for placement is high. Please do not approach or contact any Museum section directly to apply for work experience. Instead, follow the application procedures.

How to apply

  1. Choose a section at the Australian Museum that you wish to gain work experience with. You may also like to discuss this with your Careers Advisor at your school.
Please note: The Australian Museum is a cultural heritage and natural history museum. The Museum does not have a department of classical ancient history and archaeology.
  2. Fill in the work experience application form indicating two preferences.
Download a Work Experience application form. (PDF 49k). If you need a copy mailed please contact the Work Experience Coordinator on (+612) 9320 6163. The information gathered on this form will only be used for the purpose specified by this form. For further information, read the Australian Museum Privacy Statement.
  3. Send in your application form together with the documents as requested at the bottom of the application form. You may like to keep a copy for your own reference.
  4. The closing date for applications is 26 March each year. Applications received after the closing date will not be processed.
  5. Following your application, the work experience co-ordinator will notify you by mail to advise if you have gained a placement. Please be aware that it may take some time to process the application. Placements are subject to availability within each department.
